“I’m not a teacher, but an awakener.”

Robert Frost

Working in education demands increasing levels of resilience, stamina and the creative skill to manage multiple demands. I have developed a range of services to support the ongoing development of schools, teams and individuals in this dynamic and changing sector.

In order to ensure learners receive the best possible education, their teachers need to feel valued, skilled, empowered and effective in all aspects of their own practice. All of my services have this capacity at their core.

Enabling professionals to flourish

The demands of policy change, accountabilities, outcomes and inspection can easily detract from our capacity as school leaders to identify creative and sustained sources of school improvement, drawn from the core of their teachers’ expertise.

My improvement systems are focussed on exploiting opportunities for school, team and individual growth. Using astute evaluation and coaching expertise, I work with educators to identify unused capacity and stimulate the development of powerful strategies for change, growth and vastly improved outcomes.

Is it all about the results? Ultimately, yes. But without quality, embedded systems for professional learning and educational development, the highest echelon of school outcomes can never be achieved.

If you are ready to discuss a fresh approach to creating the best quality education, I am just an email away!

Testimonials

  • I found Jo to be an inspiring influence when I retrained as a secondary school teacher during 2014-15. Rather than telling you what to do, she subtly made our cohort question how we would tackle everyday teaching challenges so that we would develop professionally by finding the answers ourselves. And she got to know every member of that cohort as well. Therefore, if anyone had a problem - as inevitably I had - she knew how best to guide that trainee towards a solution. You are a name with Jo, not a number.

  • I was fortunate to be trained by Jo when she oversaw the secondary PGCE course at Newcastle University. It was very clear from the start of my course that Jo was a passionate, dedicated and empathetic leader. She has a unique ability to win over groups of people using her infectious humour and inspiring personality. Jo is committed to ensuring other people achieve their very best. She naturally understands people's strengths and weaknesses and works diligently to address areas of development. In one instance, Jo dispensed with the usual mentor/mentee observation and instead suggested a team teaching lesson. As a teacher in training who was experiencing a plateau in his development, this was a unique opportunity to move my practice on and Jo wasted no time in capitalising on it. A particular strength is Jo's empathy skills which she deploys naturally. She is not afraid of difficult conversations and uses these as powerful learning opportunities. There are many 'low points' in teacher training and Jo's expert handling of these ensures that trainee teachers continue to make progress. Jo spoke to me very early in my career about developing my leadership. She encouraged me to look beyond the classroom and into whole school leadership. I'm very grateful to Jo for taking the time to have these conversations because it set me on the path to a deeply fulfilling and rewarding career. I wholeheartedly recommend Jo for her outstanding skills and natural talent for developing professionals and inspiring them to be the very best that they can be.

  • Jo was the person who affirmed that my decision to pursue a career in education was the right one for me. Working alongside Jo was inspiring and a very positive experience which has shaped the way in which I carry out my day-to-day job, as well as giving me a more critical way to analyse situations. Jo's coaching skills, combined with her ability to connect with people, really do lend themselves to her natural ability to bring out the best in everyone with whom she works with. She is charismatic, caring and passionate about working towards changing lives through enhancing education. She is a truly inspiring person to have worked with.
